Maintenance 101: Keep Your Cycle Running Smooth Without Calling a Mechanic Every Week.

You don’t need to be a “bike guy.” You just need 15 minutes, the right hacks, and a little attitude. Whether you’re riding to work, zipping to college, or just cruising to the chai tapri your bike is doing the heavy lifting. But when’s the last time you did something about it?

Let’s keep it real:

Most of us ride until something breaks.
Then panic. Then Google.
Then spend ₹500 fixing something that could’ve been prevented with a cloth and a ₹100 bottle of chain lube.
So, here’s your no-fluff guide to keeping your cycle smooth, safe, and sexy.
No mechanic is needed. No garage visits. Just you, your ride, and a little respect.

1. The 60-Second Daily Check (Yes, Daily)

Before you hop on:
Tyre Pressure - Give it a good press. If it feels saggy, pump it up. Underinflated Tyres waste effort and can mess with your rims.
Brakes - Squeeze them. They should feel tight, not mushy.
Chain - Quick glance. If it looks like it’s crying in dust and rust, clean it tonight.
Loose Bolts - Shake the handlebar. Tap the seat. Hear any clinks? Tighten.

2. Weekly Ritual: Clean Like You Mean It

Even if your bike folds like a dream or powers through muddy roads, it still deserves a spa day.
Wipe down the frame: Use a soft, damp cloth. No, don’t pour a bucket of water.
Clean the chain:
Use an old toothbrush and some degreaser (or even soap water).
Scrub the links gently.
Dry it fully before moving to the next step.

3. Lube It or Lose It

Dry chain = noisy rides + faster wear + poor gear shifts.
Once a week:
Apply chain lube (NOT engine oil or coconut oil, we beg you).
Spin the pedals backward.
Wipe off the excess with a cloth.
That’s it. 3 mins.
Your chain will love you.

4. Monthly TLC: Get into the Nitty-Gritty

Brake Pads: Are they worn down? Screeching? Replace them.
Gears (If you have them): Shift through all the gears. If it’s skipping, it might need a tune-up or at least a cable tighten.
Tyres: Look for cracks or worn-out tread. No grip = no safety.

5. Emergency Fix Kit (Keep This with You)

Multi-tool (with Allen keys + screwdriver)
Tyre levers
Patch kit or spare tube
Mini pump
Gloves or hand wipes (you’ll thank us later)
Keep it in your backpack or saddlebag. It’s like insurance, you don’t need it until you do.
Bonus: Know When to Say “Nope, This Is a Mechanic Job”
Sometimes, DIY won’t cut it. Here’s when to stop pretending and go pro:
Your wheels are wobbling like jalebis
Brake cables have snapped
You’ve tried lubing the chain 3 times and it still sounds like a haunted swing set
Gears are skipping in every time, and it feels possessed
Mechanics exist for a reason. No shame in outsourcing the heavy stuff.

Final Thoughts:

Love Your Bike, and It’ll Love You Back
It’s a habit.
Like brushing your teeth, ignoring it, and things get ugly.
Start small.
Stay consistent.
And enjoy a ride that’s always ready when you are.
